MBCT San Francisco

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression--Classes for the Bay Area

MBCT is based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn's, who in the late 1970's decided to see if mindfulness meditation practice might lessen the symptoms of his chronic pain patients. In eight week classes, he taught and practiced with his students mindfulness, and found that they did indeed report diminished levels of pain, and increased ability to managed their symptoms.

In the 1990's, in an effort to find help for those suffering chronic depression, Siegel, Williams and Teasdale stumbled on Kabat-Zinn's work, and adapted it to serve as a bulwark against relapse. Also in 8 week courses, they taught mindfulness as well as "thought noticing" techniques, and found in outcome studies that the rate of relapse for those with a history of chronic depression dropped by about 50%.

MBCT-SF offers these classes throughout the year. Please click on classes (above) to see the current schedule.
